Notes for Mary Anderson
Mary Anderson (née Hanson), also known as Marie, was born on October 28, 1887, in Riga. Latvia.
Mary was a caregiver to her sisters, often moving to help wherever she was needed. She assisted Elizabeth in St. Johns, Oregon; Emily at the Lakewitz Farm in Holbrook, Massachusetts; and Lucy in Linnton and St. Johns, Portland, Oregon.
By 1915 or earlier, Mary may have married Arthur E. Hanson. Their son, Philip Arthur Otmann, was born in 1916.
Between 1918 and 1920, Mary moved from Boston to 1774 Minerva Street, St. Johns, Oregon, to help Elizabeth Kurzit with her two children, Edward Winfred Kurzit and Mildred Elizabeth Lanora Kurzit, and to manage Elizabeth’s boarding house. Mary and her sister Mildred assisted with chores, and Mary worked as a telegram operator. The boarding house provided lodging for workers from the Portland railyard, including Albert John Palmer and Adolph Sproyis.
From 1920 to 1921, Mary returned to Holbrook, Massachusetts, to assist Emily at the Lakewitz Farm during Fred Lakewitz’s illness. Fred passed away on April 19, 1921, from prostate cancer at the age of 50. Mary sent the telegram announcing his death from a telegraph office in Randolph, Massachusetts.
In Portland, Mary and her husband, Arthur E. Hanson, worked in the household of a lumber baron with timber holdings in Oregon and Tennessee. Mary served as the maid, cook, and housekeeper, while Arthur worked as the butler and chauffeur.
Mary Anderson (Hanson) passed away on March 26, 1972, at the age of 85 in a retirement center in Portland, Oregon. She was buried next to her husband in Lincoln Memorial Park. Arthur E. Hanson passed away on April 15, 1960, and was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland, Oregon.
